The singer Lux Interior formed The Cramps with his guitar-slinging soul-mate and wife Poison Ivy in 1976. The Cramps sound was a shivery fusion of rockabilly, surf guitar and early punk – with a reliable sense of style and an unshakeable passion for sleaze and trash like horror B-movies and sexual fetishism.
Interior, described on the band’s official website as “the psycho-sexual Elvis/Werewolf hybrid from hell”, died of a pre-existing heart condition on February 4, 2009. He was 62.
The following video is an extract of The Cramps’ legendary gig at Napa State Mental Hospital from 1978. With the patients running free, screaming in the mic and harassing the band. Opening words from Interior: “Somebody told me you people are crazy. But I’m not so sure about that, you seem to be all right to me.”
